FAQ
  • How long should I have counselling for?
That is a very personal question and will depend entirely on what you would like to achieve, your schedule, and your budget. Some people stay in counselling for years, some have it for months, some have a single session and feel they have achieved what they needed to. It is not uncommon to have counselling, finish, and then return at a later time if more issues pop up or a top-up is needed. We can discuss your expectations and preferences about the duration of counselling in your consultation, and I will check in every now and then during sessions to see whether our initial expectations still feel right.
  • How much does it cost?
A standard hour-long session costs £50 or £45 depending on the type of session. Please click here for more information. It is payable via cash, card, transfer, or PayPal. Payment is preferred to be received upon booking, as your appointment is only confirmed upon payment being received. Payment must be received at least 48 hours before your appointment is due to start. Please be aware that I operate a strict 24 hour cancellation policy.
  • Will you give me advice?
No. Counselling is not about giving advice for two simple reasons. 1) Your life is unique. You are the best person to decide how to move forward, I am here to help you make the way forward clearer, and to help you to feel more confident in getting there. 2) One of the aims of counselling is to help you to become more confident in yourself and learn to act in healthier ways. If I made decisions for you or gave you answers, you may never grow or learn to trust yourself.
  • Do you provide couples, family, or child counselling?
Currently, I unfortunately do not. However, I will be offering couples counselling from approximately September 2024 and family counselling from September 2025.
  • What happens during a session?
Ultimately, it is up to you what we spend the hour session doing and what it is you would like to focus on. However, we will work together by talking through your issues and where necessary I may use more "directive interventions". This means that sometimes I may teach you tools you can use, or ask you to perform specific actions if I think it may be beneficial in helping you.
  • How often should I have a session?
The most common frequency is weekly. However, this is ultimately up to you, your schedule and your budget. In general, the more frequent sessions are the faster progress may be made and the stronger our therapeutic connection will be. Ideally as you get closer to achieving your goals, we would decrease the frequency of sessions until eventually you no longer need them.
  • How long are sessions?
Sessions are generally 60 minutes long, however, we can increase the length to suit you. In some cases I may be able to offer sessions up to 90 minutes in length, but this must be agreed between us.
  • What is counselling/therapy?
Generally, mental health counselling (or therapy) revolves around talking about your issues and feelings in order to improve your mental health, reduce the intensity of negative feelings and change unhealthy thoughts/behaviours to reduce suffering. That is not to say that someone who has undergone counselling will never feel sad or always be in control of their emotions - we are all human! The idea is simply to help you get from where you are, to where you want to be (or at least give you the tools to get there).
