MEDITATION

At Healing Roots Counselling & Psychotherapy, I believe in a holistic approach to mental and emotional wellbeing. Meditation is one of the most accessible, effective, and scientifically proven tools for finding inner calm, clarity, and resilience. Whether you're new to meditation or looking to deepen your understanding, here’s a closer look at what it is and its benefits.

What is meditation?

First things first, meditation is not "thinking about nothing". Brains like to think! Meditation is the practice of focusing the mind and entering a state of calm awareness. In doing so, we slow the body and create a feeling of deep relaxation. We may try to shift focus away from thoughts in many types of meditation, but it is expected, especially to begin with, that you will have thoughts floating around your mind. The magic comes from simply noticing these thoughts without getting distracted by and caught up in them. Though there are many forms, meditation typically involves sitting quietly, focusing on a particular experience, and gently redirecting the mind when it wanders. This gentle redirection helps train the brain to cultivate focus, reduce stress, build discipline, and develop a sense of inner peace. Anyone can practise meditation, and it doesn't require specific beliefs or a particular level of experience.

What are its benefits?

  • Stress Reduction: Meditation is known for its ability to reduce stress and anxiety. By training your mind to stay in the present moment, meditation helps you detach from overthinking and negative thought patterns, which can ease feelings of stress.

  • Improved Focus and Concentration: The mental discipline developed through meditation can improve focus, clarity, and productivity. People often find they can stay more present and attentive in both their personal and professional lives.

  • Enhanced Emotional Health: Meditation encourages a balanced outlook on life and helps in managing negative emotions. Studies have shown that meditation can increase serotonin levels, helping to uplift mood and foster a more stable emotional state.

  • Increased Self-Awareness: Meditation encourages self-exploration, allowing individuals to develop a deeper understanding of their own thoughts, patterns, and reactions. This self-awareness can improve emotional intelligence, empathy, and the ability to respond thoughtfully to challenging situations.

  • Better Sleep Quality: Sleep struggles are common, and meditation is a powerful tool for quieting a busy mind. Regular meditation practices can improve sleep quality, reduce insomnia, and help individuals feel more rested and refreshed.

  • Physical Health Benefits: Meditation has been shown to support physical health in surprising ways. Regular practice may lower blood pressure, improve immune function, and reduce inflammation. By lowering stress levels, meditation contributes to overall physical well-being.

  • Enhanced Coping Skills: Through meditation, people learn to sit with discomfort and difficult emotions without reacting impulsively. This ability to stay calm and centred in challenging situations can improve problem-solving skills and resilience, both in daily life and during major life transitions.

Buddhist Monk Meditating

1-1 and Small Group Meditations

Meditating alone is perfectly possible. However, for beginners and even experienced meditators, in-person guided sessions can make it easier and elevate it to another level. I offer multiple types of meditation as everyone is different, and understandably enjoy different ways of meditating. Some people may like more grounded, body-based meditations, whilst others may love spiritual and energy-based practices. At Healing Roots Counselling & Psychotherapy you can choose from:

  • Breath meditation: We focus on the breath, pulling focus from busy thoughts and allowing the mind to rest.

  • Body meditation: We focus on sensations in the body, fostering mind-body connectivity and relaxation.

  • Grounding meditation: We focus on feeling strong and connected to the Earth, creating a calm and resilient mind.

  • Energy meditation: We focus on "energy", using it to build feelings of protection and rejuvenation in the body.

  • Chant meditation: We take it back to basics, using Buddhist chants to focus the mind.

  • Mantra meditation: We choose a mantra or two, meditate on it, and repeat it to instil its message deep in our minds.

  • Singing bowl meditation: We enjoy the ethereal sounds and vibrations of the singing bowl, deeply relaxing the mind.

  • Flame meditation: We focus on a candle flame, using it to anchor the mind in the present.

  • Thought meditation: We observe thoughts and practice letting them go, building focus and discipline.

  • Story meditation: I take you on a journey through your imagination to a destination of your choosing.
